Experts say that utilizing housing counseling services before, after, and during the homeownership process have achieved positive results for homeowners.
The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development released a compilation of studies in December of 2014 titled, “Housing Counseling Works- Sustainable Home ownership.” In a Turnham and Jefferson study specifically, the benefits of pre-purchase housing counseling were observed involving 574 participants.
The study concluded that after 18 months of counseling over 35 % of the participants became homeowners. Only one person fell 30 days or more behind on their mortgage payments.
In an effort to assist and support potential homeowners in the buying process, the GROWTH Initiative provides housing and credit counseling through its partnerships with the NCRC Housing Counsel Network (HCN), local nonprofits, and government entities.
It also collaborates with counseling agencies to identify potential Lease-To-Own candidates and homebuyers.
